Yesterday at art group we were standing around chatting (instead of getting on with our pictures!) and watching one of our members painting in water colour. I turns out that myself and another member haven't done a water colour picture since we were at school, a long time ago. The thing that surprised us that she was only using three colours; as an acrylic artist I find it hard to come to terms with not using white.
The upshot is that next Wednesday we are all doing a water colour picture and we are only allowed three colours! I've ordered a pad of paper but can borrow brushes and paint. This is the picture we've been challenged to paint:
Of course our established water colour artists are going to be brilliant but for Andy an myself it will be like going back to school but with lots of teachers! I may also have to paint sitting down which I never do.
I'll let you know how I get on, whatever it looks like. I'm also going to paint the same scene in acrylic on canvas as the comparison should be interesting.

Not the easiest subject to inflict on you all - get the perspective right and, with a bit of luck, the rest will follow. Anyway, I won't try to put you off! The paper is your white - watercolour being transparent, it should glow from within; just keep an eye on those shadows: their direction, i.e. their perspective, and take full advantage of the tonal contrasts: and - success shall be yours!
Fingers crossed...

I spent a happy three hours this morning water colour painting for the first time. Initially I copied the street scene we had been given, then as there was time left I did a landscape and a bit of portrait practice. I enjoyed it but I did miss having a tube of white to fall back on for highlights! We were given just three colours though so everything you can see below was painted with red, blue and yellow.
We've got another WC challenge next week but after that I think it might be back to the familiar acrylics.
